Why we track the Bronco

For players and parents

It tests rugby fitness

Rugby is repeat effort: sprint, turn, recover, go again. The Bronco is 1,200 m of exactly that, so it shows how ready a player is for the last ten minutes of a match.

It shows real change

One number, same test, same conditions. Line up a baseline against a retest six weeks later and you can see whether the training worked. No guesswork.

It keeps players training

Players who can see their time drop keep turning up. Players race their last time, not their teammates.

  1. Set the cones: start line, then 20 m, 40 m and 60 m.
  2. One set: run to 20 m and back, to 40 m and back, to 60 m and back (240 m).
  3. Run 5 sets without stopping (1,200 m) and stop the clock when the athlete crosses the start line after set 5.
  4. Touch each line with a foot. Same surface, same warm-up and similar weather each time, or the comparison isn't fair.
